If you’re entering the village of Randolph by way of Route 66, you might spy the tip of one of our somewhat hidden gems – the Montague Golf Club.
It began in 1897 with Robert Kimball, a New York financier and philanthropist. As a native of Randolph, Kimball summered in the village with his family and created the first 1,844 yards of links for his children to enjoy.
The family shared their course with visitors until it was converted into the member-owned Montague Golf Club in 1913, becoming Vermont’s second oldest golf course. And in 1925, the Kimball sisters donated 15 more acres to the club.
But the course grew again in 1965 when the estate of Robert Knight, located on the west side of the river abutting the golf club, donated an additional 65 acres to extend the property to 2,764 yards.
The property grew one last time in 1992 with the addition of 90 more acres that expanded the course from nine to 18 holes.
Today, the Montague Golf Club is owned by Sam and Jinny Sammis and it offers 6,300 yards of links, many of which follow the White River’s Third Brand. On the front nine, golfers can enjoy maple and pine tree-lined fairways, while the back nine offers an open “Scottish links-style” course with tall, heather grass-lined rolling fairways.
A 70-par course, Montague is a regulation length bluegrass property that is semi-private but with a fun, relaxed atmosphere that’s enjoyed by both members and guests.
Open from April through October, the club offers a senior (71+) discount as well as league play and junior golfing. And with a golf pro on staff, both clinics and lessons are available.
Visit the Montague website for hours, dress code, pricing, and more.
